## How much does a personal trainer cost in the Netherlands?

A personal trainer in the Netherlands costs **€50 to €100 per 60-minute session** on average in 2026, according to a May 2026 price overview by [Gymsearch](https://gymsearch.nl/blog/personal-trainer-kosten-in-nederland-wat-betaal-je-2026/index.html). Online coaching with weekly guidance runs about **€100 to €200 a month**. Training once a week with a trainer in person therefore comes to roughly €215 to €430 a month.

Those are typical ranges reported by one Dutch gym directory, not an official survey. Prices in Amsterdam, a specialist for rehab or competition prep, or sessions at your home sit at the top of the range or above it.

## Price per hour by experience and format

The biggest single driver of the hourly price is the trainer's experience, followed by the format of the session.

The Gymsearch overview (28 May 2026) splits Dutch prices like this:

| Type of training | Typical price (2026) |
| ------------------------------------------------------------- | ---------------------- |
| Beginner trainer (1 to 3 years of experience) | €50 to €65 per hour |
| Experienced trainer (5+ years) | €70 to €90 per hour |
| Specialist (for example rehab, pre/postnatal, sport-specific) | €100 to €150 per hour |
| Small group, 2 to 4 people | €25 to €40 per person |
| Travel surcharge for sessions at home | €10 to €25 extra |
| Online coaching with weekly guidance | €100 to €200 per month |

## What a personal trainer costs per month

The monthly cost depends almost entirely on how often you train with the trainer, so the honest answer to "wat kost een personal trainer per maand" is a range per frequency.

The table below is simple arithmetic on the hourly bands above, assuming about 4.3 weeks in a month. It is a worked example, not a quoted price list.

| Set-up | Sessions per month | Estimated cost per month |
| --------------------------------------------------- | ------------------ | -------------------------------- |
| 1 session a week, €50 to €100 | about 4.3 | about €215 to €430 |
| 2 sessions a week, €50 to €100 | about 8.6 | about €430 to €860 |
| 1 small-group session a week, €25 to €40 per person | about 4.3 | about €110 to €170 |
| Online coaching, weekly check-in | no live sessions | €100 to €200 |
| Hybrid: 2 live sessions a month plus online plan | 2 | depends on the trainer's package |

In practice, twice a week in person is a big monthly bill, so a common alternative is one live session plus an app-based plan for the other training days. That hybrid set-up is often priced as a package, which is why it has no fixed number above.

Packages (10 or 20 sessions paid up front) usually lower the price per session. Ask for the per-session price inside any package so you can compare it with the hourly rate.

## Why the VAT rate changes the price: 9% or 21%

Personal training on its own is taxed at 21% VAT in the Netherlands, while sport that comes with a sports facility is taxed at 9%.

The Belastingdienst applies the 9% rate to "providing the opportunity to actively do sport". For a sport accommodation, 9% only applies when the customer can use the space for sport, the operator takes care of maintenance, security or cleaning, and the operator provides the equipment. [Sport lessons, instruction or coaching that are not combined with providing a sport accommodation are taxed at 21%](https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/bldcontentnl/belastingdienst/zakelijk/btw/tarieven%5Fen%5Fvrijstellingen/diensten%5F9%5Fbtw/sportbeoefening%5Fwaaronder%5Fzwembaden%5Fen%5Fsauna/gelegenheid%5Fgeven%5Fom%5Fte%5Fsporten/gelegenheid%5Fgeven%5Fom%5Fte%5Fsporten). The planned rise of sport VAT from 9% to 21% was reversed by law, so 9% still applies to sport in 2026.

The [KOR (kleineondernemersregeling)](https://www.belastingdienst.nl/wps/wcm/connect/nl/btw/content/kor-voorwaarden) lets a trainer with turnover of at most €20,000 a calendar year charge no VAT at all. So two trainers with the same net hourly rate can quote you prices that differ by more than 20%.

This is a general explanation, not tax advice. Trainers should check their own situation with an accountant or the Belastingdienst.

## Personal trainer vs gym membership: the base cost

A gym membership in the big Dutch cities costs around €40 to €53 a month on average, which is less than one personal training session.

Crowd-sourced averages from Numbeo (October 2026) put a monthly membership at [€52.92 in Amsterdam](https://www.numbeo.com/cost-of-living/in/Amsterdam), €43.38 in Rotterdam and €40.35 in Utrecht. The CBS counted 2,310 fitness center locations with 3,237,000 customers in 2023 and reported subscription prices from €35 to €61 a month ([CBS StatLine 83822NED](https://www.cbs.nl/nl-nl/cijfers/detail/83822NED), provisional figures).

If your trainer works inside a gym, you often pay the membership on top of the PT rate. Some PT studios include access during sessions only, which is part of why their VAT rate and price differ.

## What pushes the price up or down

Beyond experience, five practical factors decide where a quote lands.

* **Location of the session.** At home costs more because of travel time; Gymsearch reports €10 to €25 extra.
* **Session length.** Some trainers sell 45-minute or 30-minute sessions; compare per minute, not per session.
* **Intake and assessment.** A paid intake or movement screen is common. Ask whether the first session is charged separately.
* **Nutrition guidance.** A meal plan and weekly food check-ins add work for the trainer and usually add to the monthly fee.
* **Cancellation terms.** Many trainers use a 24-hour cancellation rule. Read it before you buy a 10-pack.

A common mistake is comparing a €55 session with an €85 session without checking what each includes. The more expensive one may include a training plan in an app, chat support between sessions and a nutrition plan, which you would otherwise pay for as online coaching.

## Online coaching vs 1:1 sessions

Online coaching costs about €100 to €200 a month in the Netherlands, roughly the price of two to four live sessions, but you train without the trainer next to you.

What you typically get for that fee: a written training plan, adjustments every week or two, check-ins on weight, measurements or photos, and chat with the trainer. What you give up: live technique correction and the accountability of someone waiting for you at 7:00.

It depends on where you are. Beginners who do not know how to squat or deadlift safely usually do better starting with a few live sessions. People who already train and need structure, progression and nutrition often get more from online coaching for the money. Our guide on [what an online personal trainer costs](/blogs/how-much-does-an-online-personal-trainer-cost) explains the service levels in more detail.

## How to check a trainer before you pay

The Netherlands has no legal license for personal trainers that we could find, so checking a trainer is up to you.

* Ask about education and whether the trainer is listed in [FITNED.NL](https://www.nlactief.nl/), the professional register of the fitness sector presented by NL Actief.
* Ask for the KVK number. A freelance trainer is a registered business; our post on [freelance personal trainers, KVK and VAT](/blogs/personal-trainer-netherlands-zzp-kvk-vat) covers what that involves.
* Ask whether the quoted price includes VAT and at which rate.
* Ask what happens between sessions: is there a plan, an app, chat?
* Ask for the cancellation and no-show rules in writing.

If you live near the Belgian border or are comparing offers, prices there work differently; see the sibling guide on [personal trainer costs in Belgium](/blogs/personal-trainer-cost-belgium).

## Where Trainera fits

Trainera is a coaching platform: it does not set trainer prices, each trainer sets their own.

* **Finding a trainer:** the [Trainera trainer marketplace](/trainers-marketplace) lists trainers and online coaches you can contact directly.
* **The client app is free** on iOS, Android and web. If you train with a trainer, you get the features your trainer's plan includes: training and nutrition plans, check-ins, habits and chat, in 26 languages including Dutch.
* **Paying your trainer:** trainers choose a payment model (request only, a monthly subscription by card with Apple Pay and Google Pay, pay per plan, or cash for in-person sessions). Trainera does not offer iDEAL or SEPA direct debit; a trainer who wants those runs them outside the app.
* **Training without a trainer:** on trainera.fit/pricing for the Netherlands, Client Pro is €6.99 a month and Client Premium €7.99 a month, with AI-built plans included.

For trainers reading this: Trainera trainer plans in the Netherlands start from €19.99 a month (Starter, 10 clients), with Pro at €49.99 for 30 clients. If you want to sell online coaching in the €100 to €200 band, the sibling guide on [starting an online coaching business in the Netherlands and Belgium](/blogs/online-coaching-business-netherlands-belgium) covers set-up and pricing.

## Your price check before booking a trainer

Use these four numbers to judge any Dutch PT offer in 2026:

1. €50 to €100 per hour is the normal band; €100 to €150 is specialist territory.
2. Monthly cost = sessions per month x price per session; once a week is about 4.3 sessions.
3. Check the VAT: 21% for coaching alone, 9% when the space and equipment are part of the service, none under the KOR.
4. Online coaching at €100 to €200 a month replaces live sessions with a plan, check-ins and chat.

Then ask what is included between sessions. That usually explains the price difference better than the hourly rate does.
