Ideal Weight Calculator

Find your ideal body weight from your height and sex. We show four classic formulas side by side, their average, and the weight range that keeps your BMI between 18.5 and 24.9.

Hamwi (1964)77.3 kg

How it works

  • 1Each formula starts from a base weight at 5 ft (152.4 cm) and adds a fixed amount per inch above that.
  • 2We calculate Devine, Robinson, Miller and Hamwi, then average them for one practical number.
  • 3The healthy BMI range shows a wider band that suits most adults, including people with more muscle.

The four ideal weight formulas

All four add a fixed weight for every inch (2.54 cm) of height above 5 ft. They were built for adults taller than 152 cm; below that they only extrapolate.

Where these numbers come from

The equations were first published for clinical use, mostly drug dosing, and are summarised in Pai and Paloucek's review of their origin. The healthy range uses the World Health Organization BMI cut-offs of 18.5 to 24.9. An ideal weight is a reference point, not a target you must reach; health depends on much more than the scale.

Frequently asked questions

What is my ideal weight for my height?

For a 180 cm man the four formulas give about 71.5-77.3 kg, and for a 165 cm woman about 56.4-59.8 kg. The healthy BMI range at 180 cm is 59.9-80.7 kg.

Which ideal weight formula is most accurate?

None is exact. Devine is the most widely used, mainly for medication dosing, while Robinson and Miller were later refinements. Use the average and the BMI range together.

Does ideal weight account for muscle?

No. The formulas only use height and sex, so muscular people often weigh more than their ideal weight while being lean. Body fat percentage is a better check for them.

What is the ideal weight for a woman who is 5 ft 5?

At 5 ft 5 (165 cm) the formulas give roughly 124-132 lb (56.4-59.8 kg), and the healthy BMI range is about 111-150 lb (50.4-67.8 kg).

Using the result

What the number is

An estimate from simple measurements: height, weight or a tape measure. These formulas describe large groups of people well and single bodies less well, because muscle, frame size and where you carry fat all shift the true value.

How to use it

Treat it as a reference point and follow the trend. Measure the same way and at the same time of day every two to four weeks, and look at the direction of change rather than a single reading.

When to stop guessing

If the number and the mirror disagree for months, track your waist, photos and strength alongside it. A coach on Trainera reads them together and adjusts your plan.

What this calculator cannot know

This calculator works from height, sex and, depending on the tool, your weight or a few circumferences. BMI and ideal weight cannot tell muscle from fat, and a tape measure estimate can be off by several percentage points even when you measure carefully. None of them account for ethnicity or bone structure, and they are not meant for children, pregnant women or very muscular athletes. Use the result as a rough reference and talk to a doctor if you are worried about your weight. Nothing here is medical advice.
