Anonymised October 2026 data from Trainera: 77.1% of daily activity on phones, Saturday the quietest day, coaches arriving through AI assistants, and how each number was counted.

How do people actually use fitness apps in 2026?
Mostly on their phones, mostly on weekdays, and increasingly with a coach. In Trainera's anonymised October 2026 data, 77.1% of daily activity came from phones, Saturday was the quietest day of the week, and the number of active users training with a coach grew from 105 in September to 201 in October.

The phone has become the gym equipment
77.1% of daily activity came from phones. Method: we count a user-day when an account was active on a given day and we know whether that activity was on the web or in the iOS or Android app. Over eight full days, 20 to 27 October 2026, there were 2,655 such user-days, and 2,047 of them were mobile. Tracking by platform started on 20 October 2026, and 28 October was left out because the day was still running.
In practice this means the workout itself happens on a phone, between sets, often with one hand. For anyone building a training plan, that has consequences: exercise names have to be short enough to read at arm's length, rest timers matter more than long explanations, and anything that needs a laptop will be done later or not at all.
For coaches, the planning side looks different. Writing programmes and reviewing check-ins is desk work, so a coaching platform has to be good on both screens. The client logs on the phone; the coach reads it wherever they are.
Saturday is the quietest day of the week
Saturday carried 12.0% of weekly activity, against 14.9% for an average weekday. Method: for each of three full Monday to Sunday weeks (5 to 11, 12 to 18 and 19 to 25 October 2026) we calculated each day's share of that week's user-days, then averaged the shares. This keeps a fast-growing platform from making later weeks look busier. Saturday was the lowest day in each of the three weeks.
An average weekday carried roughly a quarter more activity than Saturday. The weekend is not when most people log training, at least not digitally. Sunday sat between the two.
What this means if you coach: weekly check-ins, reminders and new plan blocks land better on a weekday. A Friday nudge about the weekend session is more useful than a Saturday morning message that arrives when most clients are not opening the app. If you already use automated reminders, it is worth checking which day they go out; our article on hybrid personal training covers how coaches split in-person and app-based work across the week.
People who find us through AI assistants are mostly coaches
45.9% of accounts that arrived from AI assistants are coaches: 39 of 85. For comparison, coaches make up 26.7% of accounts that arrived from organic search. Method: an account counts as "from AI assistants" when the recorded acquisition channel is an AI assistant, such as a chatbot answer with a link. The base is accounts with a recorded channel between 28 September and 28 October 2026; 85 accounts is above our threshold of 20, but still small, so we publish the absolute numbers next to the percentage.
The likely reading is that people who ask an AI assistant which platform to use for online coaching already know what they want: they are professionals looking for a tool. Classic search brings a broader mix of people who train on their own. For coaches, this is a reason to care about how AI assistants describe their own business; we wrote about that in how trainers get recommended by AI like ChatGPT.
Almost every attributed account came without paid ads
98.5% of accounts with a known acquisition channel arrived without paid ads: 1,019 of 1,034. Method: we only know the acquisition channel for 22.2% of all accounts, so this figure describes accounts with a recorded channel, not the whole user base. Unpaid channels are organic search, direct visits, AI assistants and referrals; paid channels are paid social and search ads.
The caveat matters. Most accounts have no recorded channel at all, and we do not guess where they came from. What the number does say is that, among the accounts we can trace, paid advertising played almost no role in October 2026.
Coached training is growing faster
Active users training with a coach went from 105 in September 2026 to 201 in October 2026. Method: monthly count of active users linked to a coach on the platform. October covers 1 to 28 October, so it is an incomplete month, and the comparison already favours September on days.
We read this carefully: it is one month on a growing platform, not a trend line. What it does show is that, on this platform, more people chose to train with a person behind the plan, and the app is how that person reaches them between sessions.
Gyms are going digital at the front door
1,172 gym check-ins by QR code in 30 days. Method: the number of QR check-in events at gym entrances on the platform in the 30 days to 28 October 2026. Each check-in is one scan of a member's code at the door, so one member can account for several.
For gym owners, a scan at the door is the first piece of data that does not depend on anyone remembering to write it down. If you are considering it, our guide to gym QR check-in and attendance explains how it works in practice.
What we are not publishing this month
- Growth by country. Our analytics do not return a reliable split by country yet, so any claim about individual markets would not be checkable.
- Time to first client for new coaches. We do not measure the time from a coach's sign-up to their first client, so the number does not exist.
- Workout completion rate. The counters for started, completed and cancelled workouts do not agree with each other, so we do not interpret them.
- Paid channel performance. The base is too small for any percentage.
Methodology
- Period: 28 September to 28 October 2026, time zone Europe/Sarajevo, weeks run Monday to Sunday.
- Source: internal, anonymised aggregates from the Trainera platform (web, iOS and Android). No access to individual accounts, names, contact details or data about specific gyms.
- Threshold: every published figure rests on at least 20 accounts or records.
- Platform activity: recorded since 20 October 2026, so the mobile share uses eight full days (20 to 27 October); 28 October is excluded because the day was in progress.
- Days of the week: each day's share is calculated within each full week and then averaged, so platform growth does not distort the comparison.
- Acquisition channel: recorded for 22.2% of all accounts; every channel percentage refers only to accounts with a known channel.
- October 2026 covers 1 to 28 October, an incomplete month.
