Best Affordable Fitness App 2026: Most Features per Dollar
Which fitness app gives you the most for your money? We scored 10 apps and 2 app pairs on seven weighted criteria from vendor pages checked October 2026, then set the scores against what a year of workouts, nutrition and AI really costs. Free plans are compared separately.

Which fitness app gives you the most features for the lowest price?
If you want workouts, nutrition tracking and AI in one app, Trainera Premium scored highest on our published value method (88 of 100) at $6.99 a month, or $83.88 a year in the US. Of the apps we checked, Trainera is also the cheapest single app that covers all three. A two-app setup such as Alpha Progression plus Cronometer Gold scored 80 for $139.98 a year and goes deeper on training and food data, and if you only want a calorie tracker, Cronometer Gold ($59.99 a year) gives the most points per dollar.
One thing up front: we make Trainera. So the method is published in full, and every score ties to a page you can check. If you want the case for one tool instead of four, read the best all-in-one fitness app. If you only want the price list, use our AI fitness app price index for 2026.
How we scored value: our own method, not an industry standard
Each app gets 0 to 5 points on seven criteria, and the points are weighted to a total out of 100.
The weights are our choice. No industry standard exists for this, and we did not lab-test every app: the scores come only from what vendors say on their own websites, help centers and Apple App Store listings, checked October 2026, plus our own product facts for Trainera. Each app is scored on the cheapest paid plan that unlocks the features we count, at its US yearly price; where official pages show more than one price, the notes below say which one we scored.
| Criterion | Weight | 5 points means | 0 points means |
|---|---|---|---|
| Training and progression | 20% | Plans generated for you that adapt to your logged performance (4: plans built for you plus a log; 3: programs or classes chosen for you, or a full log; 1: exercise logged for calories) | No training features recorded |
| Nutrition and calories | 20% | Calorie and macro tracker with a large or verified food database, barcode and photo logging (4: tracker plus AI meal plans, no published database claim; 3: meal plans and recipes; 2: nutrition targets only) | No nutrition features |
| AI features | 15% | AI tools for both training and nutrition (4: several in one area; 3: one tool, or a plan generator; 1: personalization the vendor does not call AI) | No AI or algorithmic planning |
| Health integrations | 10% | One point each: Apple Watch app, Apple Health, Health Connect or Wear OS, up to two named wearables | None recorded |
| Price and limits | 20% | Under $75 a year (4 = $75-$99.99, 3 = $100-$149.99, 2 = $150-$249.99); plus half a point for a free tier, minus half for monthly or daily caps | Not scored: price not published |
| UX and reliability | 10% | One point each for iOS, Android, web app and watch app, plus one if official pages agree on price and features | - |
| Support and languages | 5% | 21 or more app languages (4 = 13-20, 3 = 6-12, 2 = 2-5) | 1 point = English only |
We cannot measure how pleasant an app feels, so "UX and reliability" uses things you can verify: where the app runs and whether the vendor's own pages contradict each other. For a pair of apps we take the better score of the two for training, nutrition and integrations, give 5 for AI when both apps have AI or algorithmic tools, take the lower of the two for UX and languages (you live with both), and score price on the combined bill. Apple Fitness+ workouts are in English with subtitles in six languages, which we count as 2.
The value scores: 10 apps and 2 app pairs
Apps that cover both training and nutrition rise to the top, because that is what the question asks for.
| App (plan scored) | Training | Nutrition | AI | Health | Price | UX | Languages | Score /100 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Trainera Premium | 4 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 4 | 5 | 5 | 88 |
| Alpha Progression Pro + Cronometer Gold | 5 | 5 | 5 | 2 | 3.5 | 3 | 1 | 80 |
| Fitbod + MacroFactor | 5 | 5 | 5 | 3 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 77 |
| MyFitnessPal Premium | 1 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 4.5 | 4 | 4 | 68 |
| Cronometer Gold | 0 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 5 | 1 | 65 |
| Lose It! Premium | 0 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 4.5 | 4 | 3 | 65 |
| MacroFactor | 0 | 5 | 4 | 1 | 5 | 4 | 2 | 64 |
| Fitbod | 5 | 0 | 4 | 3 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 62 |
| Alpha Progression Pro | 5 | 0 | 3 | 2 | 4.5 | 3 | 4 | 61 |
| Caliber Plus | 3 | 2 | 1 | 0 | 5 | 3 | 1 | 50 |
| Centr | 3 | 3 | 1 | 1 | 3 | 3 | 1 | 48 |
| Apple Fitness+ | 3 | 0 | 1 | 1 | 4 | 3 | 2 | 41 |
- Fitbod scores 5 on training because its App Store listing describes "Adaptive AI" that learns from your edits; it has no nutrition tracking, and its FAQ lists $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year (checked October 2026). The App Store also shows lower $12.99 and $79.99 items; we scored the website price, and $79.99 would give the same price score.
- Alpha Progression Pro "builds your plan and recommends weight and reps for every set" for $79.99 a year, per alphaprogression.com. It does not call this AI, so it gets 3 on AI.
- MacroFactor lists more than 1.36 million verified food entries, photo logging and a coach that adjusts your macros weekly, for $71.99 a year with no free tier, per macrofactor.com.
- Cronometer Gold is $59.99 a year on cronometer.com, with photo logging, voice logging and Crono Coach.
- MyFitnessPal loses a UX point because its official prices disagree: the Premium page seen from outside the US shows $49.99 a year, while the US App Store lists both $49.99 and $79.99 yearly items. We scored price on the higher $79.99, because we could not confirm which one a US buyer sees. More in our MyFitnessPal Premium cost guide.
- Trainera gets 4, not 5, on training and nutrition. Its AI training plans are not documented to adjust from your logged sets the way Fitbod or Alpha Progression do, and its food search draws on Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central without a published size or verification claim. It loses half a price point for its monthly caps on AI plans and its daily cap on photo scans.
With training at 40% and nutrition at 10%, or the reverse, the top three stay the same in our tests. The order behind them moves: Fitbod and Alpha Progression climb when training counts more, the calorie trackers pull further ahead of the workout-only apps when nutrition does.
What a year of workouts, nutrition and AI costs
One app that covers both sides costs 40% to 50% less a year than the two specialist pairs we scored, and you give up some depth in exchange.
| Setup | Per year (US) | Score | Points per $100 | Good to know |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Cronometer Gold | $59.99 | 65 | 108 | Nutrition only, no training |
| Trainera Premium | $83.88 (12 x $6.99) | 88 | 105 | Monthly billing only; AI plans capped per month |
| MacroFactor | $71.99 | 64 | 89 | No free tier, nutrition only |
| MyFitnessPal Premium | $49.99-$79.99 | 68 | 85 (at $79.99) | Check the price in your own store |
| Lose It! Premium | $79.99 | 65 | 81 | No monthly plan, per its help center |
| Alpha Progression Pro | $79.99 | 61 | 76 | Training only |
| Caliber Plus | $72 | 50 | 69 | Nutrition targets, no AI programming |
| Fitbod | $95.99 | 62 | 65 | Training only; a $79.99 App Store item also appears |
| Alpha Progression Pro + Cronometer Gold | $139.98 | 80 | 57 | Two apps, two logins |
| Apple Fitness+ | $79.99 | 41 | 51 | Classes, no nutrition, needs an iPhone or Apple Watch |
| Fitbod + MacroFactor | $167.98 | 77 | 46 | Strongest specialist pair, highest bill |
| Centr | $119.99 | 48 | 40 | App Store "12 Months" item (a $152.99 item also appears); web price not readable |
Prices are from the vendor pages linked above and from apple.com for Fitness+, checked October 2026. App Store prices can differ at checkout.
Points per dollar is a blunt measure. Cronometer Gold tops it, but none of its points are for training. Among setups that cover both training and nutrition, Trainera Premium has the most points per dollar, and Trainera Pro ($71.88 a year, not scored here) is cheaper still if you can live without the food photo scan, AI Nutrition Chat, AI workouts and the higher monthly AI plan limits.
Paid monthly, Fitbod plus MacroFactor is $27.98 a month ($335.76 a year) and Alpha Progression plus Cronometer Gold $23.98 ($287.76). Trainera client plans are monthly only, so $83.88 is the full yearly cost of Premium.
Free plans, compared on their own
Free plans sit outside the points-per-dollar math, because dividing a score by $0 tells you nothing.
In practice, most AI features sit behind the paywall.
| App | What stays free | AI on the free plan |
|---|---|---|
| Trainera Free | Workout logging, diet tracker, 50 exercises, basic analytics, no card | 1 AI training plan and 1 AI nutrition plan a month; no TRAI |
| Alpha Progression | Unlimited logging, your own plans, all 795 exercise videos, no ads | No, the plan generator is Pro |
| Caliber | Unlimited workouts, 800+ exercises | No AI programming |
| Cronometer | Food logging, barcode scanner, 95 nutrients | No, photo logging is Gold |
| MyFitnessPal | Food and exercise logging, macro goals; barcode scanning Premium-only since 1 October 2022 | No, Meal Scan and voice logging are Premium |
| Lose It! | Calorie budget, food database; official pages disagree on barcode scanning | No, Snap It is Premium |
The cheapest working combination is $0: Alpha Progression free for training and Cronometer free for food, with no AI planning at all. For more options, see what is really free in workout apps.
When another app is the better buy
The one criterion you care about can matter more than the total.
- You want the deepest food data. MacroFactor (1.36 million verified entries), Cronometer (95 nutrients, over 1 million lab-analyzed or verified foods) and MyFitnessPal (20.5 million+ foods) all publish more about their food databases than we do. Our macro tracking app comparison goes further.
- You want workout AI that adapts set by set. Fitbod and Alpha Progression go further here than AI plans you request from a monthly allowance.
- You compete in powerlifting. JuggernautAI ($34.99 a month or $349.99 a year on juggernautai.app) is built only for powerlifting and powerbuilding.
If you have a health condition, are pregnant or have a history of disordered eating, talk to your doctor before you follow a calorie target from any app.
Apps we left out, and why
We only scored apps whose price and features we could confirm on official pages.
- Freeletics, Zing and Cal AI: their App Store lists show many prices without billing periods, and we could not read a plan price on their websites, so a price score would be a guess.
- Future: $199 a month for a dedicated human coach, US only. A different product.
- Noom: a weight program at $209 a year on its annual plan, with no free plan; it fits the calorie-tracker question better.
- Ladder: $179.99 a year for coach-built team programs, and we found no Android app.
Where Trainera fits
Trainera is the option for someone who wants AI training plans, AI nutrition plans and a diet tracker in one app without paying for two.
Free stays free with no card: workout logging, the diet tracker, 50 exercises, basic analytics, 1 AI training plan and 1 AI nutrition plan a month. Pro ($5.99 a month in the US) adds unlimited exercises, full analytics, 5 AI training and 5 AI nutrition plans a month, a weekly AI shopping list, TRAI with 40 requests a month and offline downloads. Premium ($6.99) adds AI food photo scanning (up to 20 a day), AI Nutrition Chat, 10 AI training plans, 10 AI nutrition plans and 10 AI workouts a month, and TRAI with 90 requests a month. The app runs on the web, iOS and Android in 26 languages, with more than 1,800 exercises, more than 1,100 recipes, an Apple Watch app, and sync with Apple Health, Health Connect, Fitbit and Polar.
The limits are real. The photo scan is an AI estimate of foods, grams, calories and macros that you correct before logging, not a replacement for weighing food. There is no yearly discount. TRAI, the in-app assistant, answers training and nutrition questions but is not a medical service. If a coach or gym runs your training on Trainera, you use it for free. Prices differ by country on trainera.fit/pricing.
Your best-value setup in four questions
- Do you need both training and nutrition? If not, pick the specialist: Cronometer Gold or MacroFactor for food, Alpha Progression or Fitbod for lifting.
- Is your budget $0? Alpha Progression free plus Cronometer free, or Trainera Free if you want one AI plan of each a month.
- Under $100 a year for both? Trainera Pro ($71.88) or Premium ($83.88) if you want the photo scan.
- Is depth worth roughly double? Alpha Progression Pro plus Cronometer Gold ($139.98) or Fitbod plus MacroFactor ($167.98).
