What is the best AI fitness app in the UK?

There is no single winner: the right app depends on what you want it to do and what you are willing to pay in pounds. If you want something free and structured, start with the NHS Weight Loss Plan app, which costs nothing. If you lift in a gym and want an app to pick your sets and weights, look at Fitbod or Alpha Progression (Alpha's monthly plan is £9.99 or £10.99 on the UK App Store); for follow-along video classes, Apple Fitness+ is £9.99 a month; and if you want AI training plans and nutrition tracking in one app, Trainera Pro is £4.99 and Premium £5.99 a month in the UK.

Every pound price below comes from the UK App Store or the vendor's UK page, checked October 2026. App Store lists often include old or promotional items and rarely say whether a price is monthly or yearly, so your checkout screen is what counts.

What the NHS and UK guidelines say an app should help you do

A useful app makes it easier to hit the UK targets: roughly 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus strength work on at least two days.

The NHS guidelines for adults aged 19 to 64 say to "do at least 150 minutes of moderate intensity activity a week or 75 minutes of vigorous intensity activity a week" and to "do strengthening activities that work all the major muscle groups (legs, hips, back, abdomen, chest, shoulders and arms) on at least 2 days a week". The NHS also suggests spreading exercise "over 4 to 5 days a week, or every day" and breaking up long periods of sitting.

The UK Chief Medical Officers' physical activity guidelines were last updated on 10 July 2026 with more recent evidence and a new foreword. They also say "any strengthening activity is better than none." The 2026 text also says people taking GLP-1 medication "especially need to ensure they do activities to maintain muscle strength". If you take GLP-1 medication or have a health condition, talk to your GP before you start a new plan.

For food, the NHS Eatwell Guide asks for at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, starchy foods making up "just over a third of the food we eat" and 6 to 8 cups or glasses of fluid a day.

In practice, that turns into a short checklist for any app you try:

  • Does it plan or log strength sessions on two or more days a week, with sets and weights you can see improving?
  • Can it count your active minutes, ideally from the watch or phone you already use?
  • If you track food, does it show more than calories, so you can see whether your plate looks anything like the Eatwell Guide?
  • Can you change the plan when your week falls apart, instead of starting again?

Free options from the NHS (and two more)

Before you pay for anything, the NHS gives you free apps that cover the basics.

NHS Better Health says you can "get a free 12-week plan from the NHS Weight Loss Plan app" (NHS Better Health, checked October 2026). On the UK App Store it is listed as free, from the Department of Health and Social Care. The same seller publishes NHS Active 10 Walking Tracker and NHS Food Scanner, and NHS Better Health links its free Couch to 5K running plan.

If a 12-week habit plan is what you need, start there. If you want an app that writes gym sessions or adjusts your weights, read on.

Nike Training Club is also free, and its App Store listing says NTC Live is available in the US, the UK and select countries. And if you used Gymshark's training app, Gymshark itself says it "is no longer available to download" (Gymshark blog, checked October 2026). The US coaching app Future is not an option either: its help centre says it is "currently only available in the United States."

What AI training apps cost in the UK

The monthly prices in the table below run from £6.00 (Caliber Plus) to £30.99 (JuggernautAI), and only a few apps have a free plan you can keep.

A few things the table cannot show. Fitbod's FAQ gives its website price as $15.99 a month or $95.99 a year and says all users worldwide get the same plans and the 7-day trial, but the UK App Store list shows only legacy items, so check the price inside the app before your trial ends. Alpha Progression and Caliber are the two here with a free tier you can keep. Google Health Premium, with its Gemini-built coach, shows "From £7.99" on the UK Google Store without a billing period, and Google says its coaching needs a Fitbit or Pixel Watch.

Calorie and food tracking apps in the UK

If food is your main focus, a dedicated tracker gives you the most logging tools; the trade-off is that none of these plan your training.

MyFitnessPal shows two monthly and two yearly prices in the UK list and says "pricing varies by country and by plan length". Its AI Coach is available to Premium and Premium+ members in the UK, on iOS and in English.

Be realistic about photo logging. MyFitnessPal calls Meal Scan "a starting point, not a final answer" (Meal Scan help), and Cronometer tells users to "always check if your foods have been matched correctly". What the studies found is in our guide to how accurate AI calorie counters are, and the app picks are in best calorie counter apps with AI photo.

Where Trainera fits for UK users

Trainera is one option if you want AI training plans and a diet tracker in the same app, priced in pounds: Free, Pro at £4.99 a month or Premium at £5.99 a month.

PlanUK priceWhat you get
Free£0, no cardWorkout logging, the diet tracker, 50 exercises, basic analytics, 1 AI training plan and 1 AI nutrition plan a month
Pro£4.99 a monthUnlimited exercises, full analytics, 5 AI training and 5 AI nutrition plans a month, a weekly AI shopping list, TRAI (40 requests a month), offline downloads
Premium£5.99 a monthAI food photo scan (up to 20 a day), AI Nutrition Chat, 10 AI training plans, 10 AI nutrition plans and 10 AI workouts a month, TRAI (90 requests a month)

Plans are monthly; see the current figures on trainera.fit/pricing for the UK. TRAI is the in-app assistant: it answers questions about training, nutrition, recovery and sleep, and it can build or change your plans in chat. It is not a medical service.

The photo scan on Premium is an AI estimate. It names the foods, estimates grams, calories and macros, and you can correct each item before you log it. On every plan you can also search foods or type in a barcode number; scanning a barcode with the camera is part of the Premium scanner.

You also get more than 1,800 exercises with exercise videos, more than 1,100 recipes, the web plus iOS and Android apps in 26 languages, and sync with Apple Health, Health Connect, Fitbit and Polar. If a personal trainer coaches you through Trainera, you use it for free.

Where another app is the better pick: if you only want to log food by photo, a dedicated tracker such as Cronometer or MacroFactor may suit you better. If you mainly want instructor-led classes to follow on screen, Apple Fitness+ or Peloton are built around that. And if you want a real person checking your form, see what that costs in our UK personal trainer cost guide.

VAT, prices and your health data in the UK

The standard VAT rate in the UK is 20% (GOV.UK); the prices here are copied exactly as the stores and vendors show them, and the pound figure on your final subscription screen is the one you pay.

Your body data deserves the same care. Under UK GDPR, "data concerning health" is special category data, according to the ICO. Before you connect a watch or upload progress photos, read what the privacy policy says about selling or sharing data, and only switch on the health sync you will actually use. Our guide to data safety in AI fitness apps has a full checklist.

How to choose your app in one week

You can test most of these apps properly inside a free week, if you plan it.

  1. Pick one goal for the next 12 weeks, such as two strength sessions a week.
  2. Try a free option first: the NHS app, Nike Training Club, or the free tier of Alpha Progression, Cronometer or Trainera.
  3. If you start a paid trial, set a reminder for the day before it ends. Fitbod and Ladder give 7 days; Cal AI gives 3.
  4. Check the subscription screen in pounds before you confirm, since UK App Store lists often show several prices.
  5. After a week, keep the app that actually got you training or logging on the days you planned.
