What is the best AI fitness app in the US right now?

There is no single winner: in the US, Fitbod ($15.99 a month) is a strong pick for AI-built gym workouts, MacroFactor ($11.99 a month) for nutrition coaching, and Future ($199 a month) if you want a real human coach instead of AI. If you want AI training plans, AI nutrition plans and a diet tracker in one app, Trainera costs $0, $5.99 or $6.99 a month in the US. All competitor prices below were checked October 2026 on the vendors' own pages and app store listings.

This page is the US edition of our global AI fitness app roundup. It adds the US parts: federal guidelines, dollar prices, US-only services and the federal rule for health apps.

What the US guidelines say an app should help you do

The federal guidelines ask for weekly cardio, strength work on two days and mostly whole foods, so a good app should make those three things easy to plan and track.

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans (HHS, ODPHP) say "adults need at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity, like brisk walking or fast dancing, each week. Adults also need muscle-strengthening activity, like lifting weights or doing push-ups, at least 2 days each week." The CDC adult page gives the same 150 minutes and 2 strength days and adds that 75 minutes of vigorous activity is an alternative to the 150 moderate minutes.

For food, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, 2025-2030 are out, and DietaryGuidelines.gov sends readers to RealFood.gov. That site says: "For the first time, official U.S. guidance calls on Americans to avoid highly processed food." It describes "The New Pyramid" as "a simple guide designed to help Americans eat real, whole foods more consistently" and gives targets such as 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day, 3 servings of vegetables and 2 of fruit a day, and 2 to 4 servings of whole grains (all checked October 2026).

Here is how those lines turn into features you can check before you pay:

GuidelineWhat to look for in an app
150 to 300 minutes of moderate activity a weekA weekly view of cardio minutes, or a sync with Apple Health, Health Connect or your watch so walks count
Muscle-strengthening on at least 2 days a weekA strength plan with set and rep logging that adjusts as you get stronger
1.2 to 1.6 g of protein per kg a dayMacro tracking with a protein target you can set yourself
3 vegetable and 2 fruit servings a day, fewer highly processed foodsMeal plans or recipes built from whole foods, not only a calorie number

If you have a health condition, are pregnant or take medication that affects appetite or weight, talk to your doctor before you set targets in any app.

US prices of the main fitness apps (October 2026)

Future is a US service. Its help center says "Future Pro is currently only available in the United States" and asks for a US payment method, phone number and App Store account. We break its cost down in how much Future costs. One more US detail: Fitbod's FAQ says a membership "may be eligible for HSA and FSA reimbursement with a Letter of Medical Necessity". Check that with your plan administrator before you count on it.

Where official prices disagree

Four apps show different US prices on two official pages, so check the price inside your own app store before you subscribe.

  • MyFitnessPal: the Premium page showed $9.99 a month and $49.99 a year when we loaded it from outside the US, while the US App Store listing includes "Monthly Premium" at $19.99 and "Yearly Premium" at $79.99 next to $9.99 and $49.99 items. MyFitnessPal itself says "Pricing varies by country and by plan length." Barcode scanning has been Premium-only since October 1, 2022.
  • Strava: the US web page bills the individual plan at $59.99 a year, while the App Store lists "Strava Subscription" at $79.99 and $11.99.
  • Google Health Premium: Google's blog says "$9.99 per month or $99 per year", while the App Store still lists "Fitbit Premium Annual" at $79.99.
  • Fitbod: the website price is $15.99 and $95.99, and the App Store also lists a $12.99 "Monthly Plan" and a $79.99 yearly item. Which one you see in the app is not stated.

App Store lists are set by the vendor and can include old or promotional items, so the price at checkout can differ. Our AI fitness app price index tracks more apps in one table.

Which app fits which kind of American user

Pick by your main goal first and the AI label second, because several popular apps do not use AI at all.

Your goalStrong fitWhy
Lift in a gym with AI picking weights and exercisesFitbodWorkouts adapt to your logged sets; no nutrition features
A human coach who checks in on youFuture1-on-1 coach, US only, the most expensive option here
Follow a coach-written program with a teamLadderNew plan each week from a coach; we found no Android app

Train for a raceRunna or StravaRunning plans and activity tracking are their core
Follow along with videos on Apple devicesApple Fitness+Trainer-led workouts and Custom Plans, $9.99 a month
Training plan, meal plan and diet tracker in one place on a budgetTraineraFree tier, paid plans at $5.99 and $6.99 a month

A few honest notes. If you only want to log food by photo, a dedicated tracker may suit you better than an all-in-one app. Google Health Premium needs a Fitbit or Pixel Watch and you must be over 18, so it suits people who already own one. And if you are on GLP-1 medication, Noom and MyFitnessPal both mention GLP-1 features, but dosing and nutrition questions belong with your doctor, not an app.

We found no Ladder app in a Google Play search, so Android users should look at Fitbod, Runna, Strava or Trainera instead. We say "found no", not "there is none", because Ladder has not published a statement either way.

What a year costs: one app or two

Most apps on this list cover either training or nutrition, so if you want both you often pay twice.

With yearly billing at the prices above, Fitbod plus MacroFactor comes to $95.99 plus $71.99, or $167.98 a year. Apple Fitness+ plus MacroFactor is $79.99 plus $71.99, or $151.98. Noom's annual plan is $209 on its own. Future is a different category: $1788 for 12 months buys a human coach, which some people need and many do not.

Trainera Premium is billed monthly only, so 12 months at $6.99 come to $83.88, with training plans, nutrition plans and the diet tracker in the same app. Pro at $5.99 a month leaves out the food photo scan and AI single workouts.

Two subscriptions also mean logging in two apps every day, so test whether you will really keep both up before you pay for a year.

Your health data in US fitness apps

If a fitness app is not covered by HIPAA, the FTC's Health Breach Notification Rule can still apply to it.

The FTC says "The Rule applies to health apps and similar technologies not covered by HIPAA." Under the updated rule, companies must notify people "without unreasonable delay" and "within 60 calendar days after the breach is discovered" (checked October 2026). That covers breaches, not what an app may share, so read the privacy policy too.

Policies differ a lot. Noom's privacy policy carries the line "NOTICE: This website may sell your sensitive personal data." MacroFactor's policy says "We do not sell your Personal Data to third parties." Our guide to privacy in AI fitness apps has a checklist to go through before you sign up.

Where Trainera fits

Trainera is a good fit if you want AI training and nutrition plans in one app at a low monthly price, and less of a fit if you want a 1-on-1 human coach included in the price, or if a race is your only goal and you want an app built just for running.

Plan (US)PriceWhat you get
Free$0, no cardWorkout logging, diet tracker, 50 exercises, basic analytics, 1 AI training plan and 1 AI nutrition plan a month
Pro$5.99/monthUnlimited exercises, full analytics, 5 AI training and 5 AI nutrition plans a month, weekly AI shopping list, TRAI with 40 requests a month, offline downloads
Premium$6.99/monthAI food photo scan (up to 20 a day), AI Nutrition Chat, 10 AI training plans, 10 AI nutrition plans and 10 AI workouts a month, TRAI with 90 requests a month

TRAI is the in-app assistant. You can ask it to build or change your own training and nutrition plans in chat, and it sticks to training, nutrition, recovery and sleep topics. It is not a medical service. The food photo scan gives an AI estimate of the foods, grams, calories and macros on your plate, and you can correct items before you log them. For typed searches, food data comes from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central.

The library has more than 1,800 exercises, exercise videos and more than 1,100 recipes. The app runs on the web, iPhone (with an Apple Watch app) and Android, syncs with Apple Health, Health Connect, Fitbit and Polar, and works in 26 languages, including Spanish. If you later hire a personal trainer who coaches on Trainera, you use the app for free as their client. Prices differ by country on trainera.fit/pricing.

A one-week test before you pay for anything

Use the free tiers and trials to test two apps against your real week, then keep one.

  1. Write down your goal in one line, for example "lift 3 days, walk 150 minutes, hit my protein target".
  2. Pick two apps from the goal table above. Start trials on the same day so they end together.
  3. Log every workout and every meal in both for seven days. Notice which one you open without thinking about it.
  4. Check the price inside your own app store, not on a review site, and cancel the trial you will not keep before it renews.
  5. Read the privacy policy section on selling or sharing data before you connect a watch or upload photos.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best AI fitness app in the US in 2026?

It depends on your goal. Fitbod ($15.99 a month on its website) is a strong pick for AI gym workouts, MacroFactor ($11.99 a month) for macro tracking, and Future ($199 a month) if you want a human coach. Trainera covers AI training plans, AI nutrition plans and a diet tracker in one app for $0, $5.99 or $6.99 a month in the US.

Is there a free AI fitness app in the US?

Yes, a few have free tiers. Trainera Free costs nothing with no card and includes 1 AI training plan and 1 AI nutrition plan a month, MyFitnessPal has a free logging tier, and Strava has a free version. MacroFactor, Ladder and Noom offer trials, not free plans, and Fitbod's official pages describe a 7-day free trial rather than a free plan.

How much does MyFitnessPal Premium cost in the US?

MyFitnessPal shows two figures on official pages: its Premium page showed $9.99 a month and $49.99 a year when loaded from outside the US, while the US App Store lists $19.99 monthly and $79.99 yearly items too. Check the price in your own app store before you subscribe.

Are fitness apps covered by HIPAA?

Not always. The FTC says its Health Breach Notification Rule applies to health apps and similar technologies not covered by HIPAA, and requires notice within 60 calendar days after a breach is discovered. Read each app's privacy policy for what it may share or sell.

How much exercise do US guidelines recommend for adults?

The Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans say adults need at least 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity a week, plus muscle-strengthening activity on at least 2 days a week. The CDC lists 75 minutes of vigorous activity as an alternative to the 150 moderate minutes.
