What does gym software in Switzerland need to handle?

Gym software in Switzerland has to cope with four local realities: Swiss VAT (MWST/TVA/IVA) at 8.1% once taxable turnover reaches CHF 100,000, member health data that the revised Data Protection Act (nDSG) treats as sensitive, Swiss payment habits (cards, TWINT, QR-bill, eBill and LSV+ direct debit, which ends for CHF on 30 September 2028), and members who speak German, French or Italian. Published prices for Swiss gym software run from CHF 0 (SportsNow Free) to CHF 445 a month and more (PIA Pro), and Trainera's gym plans in Switzerland start from CHF 129 a month.

This guide covers each of those points with the official source, compares published prices, and says plainly what Trainera does and does not do for a Swiss fitness center. Figures are as of October 2026.

The Swiss fitness market in numbers (2025)

Switzerland had 1,441 fitness centers with 1.451 million members and CHF 1,362 million in net revenue in 2025, according to the swiss active Eckdatenstudie 2026.

Measure (Switzerland, 2025)Value
Members1,451,000 (+5.8% on 2024)
Fitness centers1,441 (+3.3%)
Net revenueCHF 1,362 million (+4.4%)
Average annual membership feeCHF 997
Average members per center1,007
Share of the population with a membership16.0% (22.6% of people aged 15 to 65)
Members on 12-month / 1-month / 24-month contracts76.2% / 9.5% / 3.5%
Centers offering digital extras such as apps87.6%
Centers offering personal training68.6%
Average check-ins per center per month6,077

Three of these numbers shape a software decision. With three in four members on 12-month contracts, renewals and annual invoices matter more than monthly billing. With about 6,077 check-ins a month, the average center needs check-in to be fast at the desk. And with 87.6% of centers already offering an app, members expect one.

Swiss VAT for gyms: what your software and bookkeeping must reflect

A gym becomes liable for Swiss VAT once it earns CHF 100,000 or more a year in taxable turnover worldwide, and the standard rate has been 8.1% since 1 January 2024.

Annual VAT reportingpossible since 2025 up to CHF 5.005 million turnoverESTV principles

What is taxed and what is exempt depends on the service. In its sector guidance on education, the ESTV treats courses that mainly serve fitness, training or health, such as aerobics, spinning, yoga, bodybuilding and strength training, as taxable at the standard rate. Learning a sport as such (a tennis or karate course) counts as exempt education. Entry fees for sporting events are exempt, and so are membership fees that non-profit sports clubs charge their members under their statutes.

The ESTV publication we checked has no line that names "personal training" specifically. Our reading, not an official statement: for a VAT-registered commercial gym, memberships and personal training are normally taxable at 8.1%. Special cases, such as renting space to freelance trainers, are worth a call to the ESTV or your Treuhänder.

For software this means two things. Prices you show members should state whether VAT is included, and your payment records must export cleanly into your accounting so the quarterly or annual return is easy. This is research, not tax advice: check your situation with the ESTV or a fiduciary.

nDSG: member health data is sensitive data

Under the revised Federal Act on Data Protection, in force since 1 September 2023, data about health and biometric data that identifies a person are "particularly sensitive" personal data, and consent for them, where consent is needed, must be explicit.

The revDSG (SR 235.1) sets the duties that matter most to a gym:

  • Art. 5 and 6: health data is sensitive; explicit consent where consent is the justification.
  • Art. 19: inform people when you collect their data (your privacy notice).
  • Art. 25: answer access requests, as a rule within 30 days.
  • Art. 24: report data security breaches likely to cause a high risk to the FDPIC (EDÖB) as quickly as possible.
  • Art. 9 and 16: a software provider may process data only as you yourself could, and transfers abroad need adequate protection or safeguards.
  • Art. 60 and 61: fines of up to CHF 250,000, aimed mainly at the responsible private individuals (in exceptional cases up to CHF 50,000 against the business, Art. 64).

In our reading, injuries, illnesses, medication, and body weight recorded in a health context sit in this category, and so does fingerprint or face access at the door. US providers certified under the Swiss-U.S. Data Privacy Framework can receive data without extra safeguards since 15 September 2024, as the Federal Council announced.

When you compare gym software, ask each provider where data is processed, which subprocessors it uses, whether a data processing agreement is available, and how member data is exported and deleted. The gym stays the controller of its member data either way. The sibling guide on data protection for Swiss gyms under the nFADP has a full checklist. This is not legal advice.

Payments: cards, TWINT, QR-bill, eBill and the end of LSV+

People in Switzerland pay mostly by debit card and cash in person and by payment app or credit card at a distance, and gyms that collect by LSV+ must move to another method before the last CHF direct debit on 30 September 2028.

The practical question for any software: which of these does it run itself, and which do you run through your bank or payment provider? The sibling guide on gym payments in Switzerland with TWINT and QR-bill goes through each option.

Members in German, French and Italian

A Swiss gym software should work in at least German, French and Italian, for members and for staff.

A chain with sites in Zurich, Lausanne and Lugano serves members who expect the app, the emails and the training plans in their own language. Searches show the split: "fitnesscenter software" in German-speaking Switzerland, "logiciel gestion salle de sport" in Romandie and "software gestionale palestra" in Ticino. Check three places: the member app, automated messages, and exercise instructions. A translated menu with English exercise names is a common gap.

Where Trainera fits for a Swiss gym

Trainera is an all-in-one platform for gyms, trainers and their members, priced in Swiss francs on trainera.fit/pricing for Switzerland.

Trainera gym plan (Switzerland)Monthly priceWhat it adds
CoreCHF 129Self-serve, card billing; dashboard, packages, member card with QR check-in, Leads CRM, class planner, online card sales, website builder, community feed, TRAI
White LabelCHF 239Your own branded iOS and Android apps (store submission handled by Trainera); book a call, invoiced
StudioCHF 279White Label plus Community Plus and Automations; book a call
Extra trainer (after 3 included)CHF 16per trainer per month
Add-onsCommunity Plus CHF 21, Automations CHF 32per month

Yearly billing is 10 times the monthly price. What a Swiss gym gets in practice:

  • Membership packages in CHF with your own price and billing cycle, sold online by card through your own Stripe account with a 0% Trainera platform fee. Stripe bills its processing fee to you; Trainera keeps nothing.
  • An online package purchase is a one-off card payment per package, not an automatically renewing card subscription.
  • Payments you take at the desk, such as cash or a bank transfer, are recorded in Trainera.
  • Digital member card with QR check-in in the member app, plus manual check-in from the gym overview.
  • Leads CRM with a 7-stage pipeline and follow-up reminders, class planner with recurring series and rosters.
  • The app in 26 languages, including German, French and Italian.
  • TRAI, the built-in AI assistant, answers questions about your members, leads and classes, with 200 requests a month on every gym plan. It reads gym data; member and class changes are made in the app itself.

What Trainera does not do today: it has no TWINT, no QR-bill, no eBill and no LSV+ collection. A gym that invoices annual memberships by QR-bill or collects by eBill keeps doing that through its bank or provider and records the payment in Trainera. Trainera offers no cancellation button feature, and we make no claims here about hosting location or certifications: ask for the data processing details you need and decide as the controller.

If you are moving from another system, the guide on switching gym software without downtime lays out the steps. Contract terms and renewals are covered in the sibling post on Swiss gym membership contract rules.

Your shortlist checklist for Swiss gym software

Run every candidate through these questions before you book a demo:

  1. Does it handle 12-month contracts and renewals, which cover 76.2% of Swiss members?
  2. How do members pay: card, TWINT, QR-bill, eBill? Which of these runs in the software and which through your bank?
  3. If you use LSV+ today, what replaces it before 30 September 2028?
  4. Do payment exports work for your VAT return at 8.1%, or at the 5.3% flat rate if you use it?
  5. Where is member health data processed, and is a data processing agreement available under the nDSG?
  6. Are the member app, messages and exercise instructions in German, French and Italian?
  7. What is the real monthly price in CHF with the modules, trainers and payment fees you need?

Write the answers next to each other in one table. The cheapest offer often changes once payment fees and modules are in.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best gym software in Switzerland?

It depends on your size and how members pay. Check VAT-ready exports, nDSG data handling, German, French and Italian for members, and which payment methods (card, TWINT, QR-bill, eBill) the software runs itself. Published Swiss prices range from CHF 0 (SportsNow Free) to CHF 445 a month and more (PIA Pro); Trainera starts at CHF 129.

Is VAT charged on a gym membership in Switzerland?

For a VAT-registered commercial gym, memberships are normally taxable at the 8.1% standard rate: ESTV practice treats fitness and strength training courses as taxable. Gyms under CHF 100,000 taxable turnover are not liable. Check special cases with the ESTV or a fiduciary.

When does LSV+ end in Switzerland?

SIX ends LSV+ and BDD direct debit: the last EUR debit is on 31 August 2027 and the last CHF debit on 30 September 2028. No new financial institutions were admitted after 31 December 2025. SIX names eBill, QR-bill, standing orders or single payments as alternatives.

Is gym member health data sensitive under the Swiss nDSG?

Yes. The revised Data Protection Act, in force since 1 September 2023, treats health data and identifying biometric data as particularly sensitive. Where consent is needed it must be explicit, and fines of up to CHF 250,000 can hit the responsible individuals.

Does Trainera support TWINT or QR-bill?

No. Trainera sells gym packages online by card through the gym's own Stripe account with a 0% platform fee. TWINT, QR-bill, eBill and LSV+ run through the gym's bank or provider, and the payment is recorded in Trainera.
