How do you build a Ramadan coaching program for your clients?

Build the month around the fast, not around your normal week. Move sessions to the evening, after iftar or between iftar and suhoor as the Saudi Ministry of Health advises, cut intensity and session length, plan food for two eating windows, and time check-ins for the hours when fasting clients are awake and online. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, subject to moon sighting, so the program should be ready and sold in January.

This guide is written for the coach. If a client wants the version for the person who is fasting, send them our training during Ramadan guide. For how the five daily prayers shape a normal training week, see the prayer-time training schedule.

What the official guidance says about training while fasting

Taken together, the sources below point to three things: train in the evening, train shorter and lighter, and send anyone with a health problem to a doctor before the month starts.

The Saudi Ministry of Health puts it plainly on its Ramadan physical activity page: "The best times to exercise in the holy month of Ramadan are: Two hours after breakfast [i.e. iftar]. Between breakfast and suhoor (after Tarawih prayers)." The same page says "Consult your doctor if you have any health problems before doing any physical activity" and reminds people that if the fast falls in summer, they must consider the heat.

Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare"Reduce your usual workout intensity by 20-30% and shorten your sessions to 30-45 minutes"Your starting point for load and session length
Triki et al., Frontiers in Nutrition 2024Resistance training is safe while fasting; training fed "might be more effective" for maximal strengthStrength clients do their heavy work after iftar
Khaleej Times, one Abu Dhabi studio"Pre-iftar is packed... Post-iftar is more for performance and heavier work."Some clients will still want a short pre-iftar session: keep it light

The Triki trial is small (37 active men, 8 weeks, afternoon fasted versus evening fed training) and included no women, so it cannot tell you how female clients respond. Use it as a reason to schedule heavy lifts after iftar, not as a promise of results.

The 4-week Ramadan program, week by week

Treat Ramadan as a maintenance block with a planned ramp-down and a planned return, not as a month to chase personal records.

Agree the plan with each client before the first fast, and adjust this template to their level, work hours and sleep.

Three session formats to offer

  • After iftar. The main format: warm-up, two or three compound lifts, a little accessory work, done inside 30-45 minutes. Leave enough time after the meal so the client is not training on a full stomach.
  • After Tarawih. For clients who pray at the mosque and train late. Same structure, a little lighter, and finish early enough to protect sleep before suhoor.
  • Short pre-iftar. For clients who insist on training while fasting. Mobility, a walk or easy bodyweight work only, then break the fast straight after. No heavy sets and no conditioning finishers.

Home-based clients and women who train only in women-only spaces need the same structure with their own equipment. Our post on women-only online coaching in the Gulf covers how to run those programs and their privacy.

What to ask in the Ramadan intake questionnaire

Ask about the client's real Ramadan day before you write a single session, because work hours, prayers and sleep all shift.

  • What time do you usually eat iftar and suhoor, and do you eat at home or with family and guests?
  • Do you pray Tarawih at the mosque, and on which nights?
  • What are your work or study hours during Ramadan?
  • How many hours do you usually sleep in Ramadan, and in how many blocks?
  • Which training slot works for you: after iftar, after Tarawih or before iftar?
  • Will you train at home, at a gym or in a women-only facility?
  • Do you have any health condition, take any medication or are you pregnant? If yes, talk to your doctor about fasting and training before we start.

The health question is not a formality. Whether a client with diabetes, a heart condition or a pregnancy should fast or train is their doctor's call; your job is to ask, refer and adapt the plan once they have medical guidance.

How to plan suhoor and iftar nutrition

Split the day's food across iftar, a meal after training and suhoor, and keep the client's usual targets unless their goal changes for the month.

Many fasting clients do not need a new diet, they need the same food moved into a shorter window. Common problems to plan around: a very large iftar, little protein until late at night, and a skipped suhoor.

MealWhenWhat to planCommon mistake
IftarAt sunsetBreak the fast with water and a light start, then a balanced meal with proteinEating the whole day's food in one sitting, then training too soon
After trainingLate eveningA protein-focused meal or snackSkipping it because iftar "was enough"
SuhoorBefore dawnProtein, slower-digesting carbohydrates, fruit or vegetables, waterSkipping suhoor to sleep longer
Between mealsIftar to suhoorSpread water across the eveningTrying to drink it all at once before dawn

Write the plan around the client's family table. Iftar is often shared, with dishes the client does not choose, so give portion guidance and a protein target rather than a fixed menu.

When to check in and message clients during Ramadan

Move check-ins and reminders to the evening, after iftar and Tarawih, and keep anything non-urgent out of the hour before iftar and the time around suhoor.

The evening is when people are online anyway. Saudi Arabia's communications regulator reports that "Peak internet usage occurs between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.", as summarised by MIT Sloan Management Review Middle East (checked October 2026). That figure is not specific to Ramadan, but during the fast the evening is also when clients eat, pray and have free time.

MessageGood timing in RamadanWhy
Session reminderAfter iftar, before the agreed sessionThe client has eaten and can decide
Weekly check-in formEvening, after TarawihThe client has time to answer properly
Suhoor nudge (food and water)Only if the client asked for itA pre-dawn notification nobody asked for feels intrusive
Eid restart messageAfter Eid, not on the day itselfLet clients celebrate first

If you use automations, check your quiet hours. In Trainera, by default nothing goes out between 21:00 and 08:00, and one person gets at most 2 automated messages a day and 6 a week from you; both are adjustable. That default covers exactly the evening window your fasting clients are awake in, so open your Ramadan automations, move the quiet hours for the month and put them back after Eid. For message wording, our automated check-in message examples are a good base to adapt.

How to sell a Ramadan challenge as a paid package

Package the month as a fixed program with a clear start (the first day of Ramadan), a clear end (Eid) and a price you set, so clients buy a plan for the month rather than a vague promise.

  1. Define the offer. For example: the 4-week evening plan, an iftar and suhoor nutrition plan, a weekly check-in and a group space, for clients who want to stay consistent.
  2. Avoid result promises. Do not sell "lose X kg in Ramadan". Sell consistency, strength kept and a plan that fits the fast.
  3. Open sales early. With the expected start around 8 February 2027, announce in January so clients can plan, and confirm the exact start once the moon sighting is announced.
  4. Run a group element. A private community where clients share their evening sessions can give people a reason to keep going through weeks 3 and 4. Our list of fitness challenge ideas for clients has formats that work without weight-loss targets.
  5. Sort payment before the month starts. In Saudi Arabia and the UAE the payment options differ; our sibling post on coaching payments in Saudi Arabia and the UAE explains what clients use and what you need.

If Ramadan coaching is part of a new business, start with the basics in our sibling guide on starting an online coaching business in Saudi Arabia.

Where Trainera fits for Ramadan coaching

Trainera keeps the plan, the nutrition, the check-ins and the automated messages in one system, in Arabic or English.

  • Arabic and English. The app runs on the web, iOS and Android in 26 languages, and Arabic is fully right-to-left.
  • Plans and nutrition. Build the 4-week training plan and the iftar and suhoor nutrition plan from a library of more than 1,800 exercises and more than 1,100 recipes. Questionnaires are on every plan, so the Ramadan intake can go out as a form.
  • Automations. Starter includes 1 automation, Pro 3, Business 10 with the visual builder, and Enterprise unlimited. Quiet hours and message caps are adjustable for the month, and if a client replies STOP, automated messages from you stop.
  • Community and challenges. A client community is on Pro and up; challenges and leaderboards are on Business and up.
  • TRAI. The built-in AI assistant (on trainer plans from Starter up) answers questions about training and fasting in Ramadan, in the user's language. It is not a medical service, and health questions still go to a doctor.
  • Payments. Card through Stripe (the web checkout can show Apple Pay or Google Pay on devices that have it set up), PayPal, bank transfer, and cash you record. PayPal in Trainera does not support SAR or AED.

Coaches in Saudi Arabia and the UAE see prices in US dollars: Starter $19.99, Pro $49.99 and Business $99 a month, a flat price per plan, not per client, with a platform fee on coaching paid inside the platform of 8% on Starter, 5% on Pro and 3% on Business. Prices differ by country on trainera.fit/pricing. You can start on the Free plan with no card and create a trainer account to test the setup before January.

Your Ramadan 2027 preparation checklist

Work back from the expected start date, which Gulf News gives as Monday 8 February 2027, "subject to the official sighting of the crescent moon", with Eid al-Fitr forecast for 10 March 2027 (checked October 2026). Each country confirms its own dates.

  1. Early January: write the 4-week template, the session formats and the nutrition plan.
  2. Mid January: open sales and send the intake questionnaire.
  3. Late January: agree each client's session slot.
  4. The week before: adjust automation quiet hours, check-in times and reminder wording.
  5. Day one: confirm the start date after the moon sighting and send the first evening check-in.
  6. The last ten nights: switch to the lighter plan and prepare the Eid message.
  7. After Eid: restore quiet hours, restart the normal program and offer ongoing coaching.

Set up your Ramadan check-ins and reminders with Trainera automations and keep every message in the right window.

Frequently Asked Questions

When should my clients train during Ramadan?

The Saudi Ministry of Health advises exercising two hours after iftar, or between iftar and suhoor after Tarawih prayers. Use the evening as the default slot and keep any pre-iftar session short and light.

How much should I reduce training during Ramadan?

Johns Hopkins Aramco Healthcare suggests reducing usual intensity by 20-30% and shortening sessions to 30-45 minutes. Treat the month as maintenance, then build back after Eid.

When is the best time to send client check-ins in Ramadan?

In the evening, after iftar and Tarawih. Avoid the hour before iftar and send suhoor reminders only to clients who asked for them. If you use automations, adjust the quiet hours for the month.

When does Ramadan 2027 start?

Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin on Monday 8 February 2027, subject to the official sighting of the crescent moon, with Eid al-Fitr forecast for 10 March 2027. Each country confirms its own dates.

Should clients with diabetes or other health conditions train while fasting?

That is a question for their doctor, not the coach. Ask about health conditions, medication and pregnancy in your Ramadan intake and refer clients to their doctor before they start.
