Start an Online Coaching Business in Saudi Arabia (2026)
A practical setup guide for coaches in Saudi Arabia: the trainer licence register, freelance status, 15% VAT and ZATCA e-invoicing, client health data under the PDPL, how Saudi clients pay, and packages built around Arabic, prayer times, Ramadan and women-only demand.

What do you need to start an online coaching business in Saudi Arabia?
To start an online coaching business in Saudi Arabia, settle four things before your first paying client: your licence and work status (the Ministry of Sport trainer register and a freelance or business document), your tax position (VAT is 15%, and ZATCA e-invoicing applies once you are in scope), how you protect client health data under the PDPL, and how Saudi clients will pay you. Then build packages around Arabic, prayer times, Ramadan and women-only demand.
This guide is written for the coach. If you are a client looking to hire someone, our guide to online personal trainers in Saudi Arabia and the UAE is the better read. If you work from the UAE, permits and VAT there are different: see freelance personal trainer in the UAE.
Nothing here is legal or tax advice. Where we could not confirm a rule on an official page, we say who to ask.
The local facts that matter, in one table
These are the figures and rules we could confirm on official or reputable pages, checked October 2026.
| Topic | What we found | Source |
|---|---|---|
| VAT rate | 15%, in force since 1 July 2020 (raised from 5%) | ZATCA news |
| E-invoicing (FATOORA) | Phase 1 since 4 December 2021; Phase 2 (integration with ZATCA) rolls out in waves from 1 January 2023 | ZATCA e-invoicing |
| Wave 25 of Phase 2 | Taxpayers with turnover above SAR 187,500 in any of 2022 to 2025 must comply by 1 February 2027 | EY Tax News |
| Data protection | PDPL in force since 14 September 2023; health data counts as sensitive data | SDAIA guide |
| Trainer licence register | SAUDIREPS, run by the Ministry of Sport, using EuropeActive levels (Personal Trainer = level 4) | Archived MoS service page |
| Freelance document | Self-employment document issued online through the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (freelance.sa) | HRSD service page |
| Card processing | Stripe's country list includes the UAE but not Saudi Arabia | stripe.com/global |
| Local payment rails | mada (national debit network) and SADAD (bill payment) are both owned by the Saudi Central Bank; electronic payments were 85% of retail payments in 2025 | SAMA mada, Zawya |
Step 1: settle your licence and work status
Start with the Ministry of Sport's trainer register and your freelance status, and confirm both with the authorities before you sell anything.
The SAUDIREPS trainer register
The Ministry of Sport runs an e-service called "Pro Fitness Trainer Registration Request (SAUDIREPS)". The service page says it lets individuals "submit a license request for a professional fitness trainer license" and that the Saudi Register for Fitness Professionals is part of the Quality of Life Program. The requirements listed are a resume, a training certificate and a first aid certificate, and the duration is listed as "One Year".
The levels follow EuropeActive: Assistant Fitness Instructor (level 2), Fitness Instructor (level 3), Group Fitness Instructor (level 3) and Personal Trainer (level 4).
One caution. The live mos.gov.sa site could not be reached when we checked in October 2026, so the details above come from an archived copy of the service page captured on 29 February 2024. The page also does not say whether the licence is mandatory for every trainer, or whether it covers coaching that happens only online. Check with the Ministry of Sport before you assume either way.
Freelance document or company
The Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development issues a self-employment practice document through freelance.sa, and its service text says the process is electronic with "no need to visit the ministry". We could not confirm whether personal training is an approved activity there, because the activity list did not load for us. Check with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development on freelance.sa before you apply.
Step 2: understand VAT and e-invoicing early
Saudi VAT is 15%, and ZATCA's e-invoicing rules reach smaller businesses in waves, so check your position before you set prices.
Whether you must register for VAT depends on a threshold we could not confirm on a ZATCA page, so check with ZATCA (the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority) directly. If you are in scope, your prices must account for the 15%, and clients should know whether a package price includes VAT.
On e-invoicing, Phase 2 is now reaching businesses with turnover above SAR 187,500 in any year from 2022 to 2025, with a 1 February 2027 deadline for Wave 25. We cover the phases in VAT and e-invoicing for fitness businesses in Saudi Arabia.
Step 3: handle client health data with care
Under Saudi Arabia's PDPL, data about a person's health is sensitive data, and online coaching runs on exactly that kind of data.
Think about what you collect: body weight, progress photos, injuries, medical history, sometimes cycle notes for female clients. In practice:
- Collect only what you use. If you never look at a field in your intake form, remove it.
- Tell clients what you store, why, and who sees it.
- Keep progress photos inside a coaching app with a login, not in WhatsApp galleries or a shared phone.
- Do not share client photos as before-and-after posts without explicit, written permission.
For what the law requires of you, read the SDAIA guide linked above or talk to a lawyer.
Step 4: decide how Saudi clients will pay you
Most Saudi clients pay electronically, but Stripe does not list Saudi Arabia as a supported country, so plan your payment setup around what is actually available to you.
| Method | What it is | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| mada | National debit network owned by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA), with e-commerce, contactless and SoftPOS options | A Saudi bank or payment provider that offers mada acceptance |
| Apple Pay | Supported in Saudi Arabia, per Apple's country list (checked October 2026) | A provider that accepts Apple Pay |
| SADAD | SAMA's bill payment system, paid through banking channels and licensed wallets | A biller setup through your bank or provider |
| STC Bank | The former stc pay wallet, now a SAMA-licensed digital bank | Clients with an account; check acceptance with STC Bank |
| Tamara (pay later) | SAMA-licensed buy-now-pay-later company | A merchant agreement with Tamara |
| Bank transfer | Direct transfer to your account | A bank account in the name your business uses |
Bank transfer is the simplest start, but someone has to check each payment came in. We compare every option in how coaches in Saudi Arabia and the UAE get paid.
Step 5: build packages without guessing market rates
Price from your own costs and your time per client, not from rates you saw quoted on social media.
We found no reliable published "Saudi market rate", so build the price from the bottom up:
- List your monthly costs: software, payment fees, VAT if you are registered, education and certification renewals.
- Estimate hours per client per month: program writing, check-in replies, video form reviews, messages.
- Decide how many clients you can coach well at once, then work out what each must pay to cover costs and your target income.
- Test it with your first clients and adjust after 2-3 months.
Then shape packages around how people here train:
| Package | What it includes | Who it suits |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly coaching | Training plan, nutrition guidance, weekly check-in, messaging | Clients who want ongoing accountability |
| 12-week program | Fixed start and end, a goal, check-ins every week or two | Clients with a deadline: a wedding, a season, a first gym membership |
| Ramadan program | 4 weeks of shorter sessions after iftar, suhoor and iftar meal guidance | Clients who stop training every Ramadan and lose progress |
| Women-only small group | Home or gym program, private group community, female coach | Women who want privacy and a group to train with |

Step 6: plan around Arabic, prayer times, Ramadan and women-only demand
Coaching that fits the local week and year is easier for clients to stick with.
Arabic first
Offer your plan, intake form and messages in Arabic as well as English. In a 2026 UAE and Saudi survey by the gym chain GymNation, 55% of respondents answered in Arabic and 45% in English (GymNation report, a company survey).
Prayer times and evening check-ins
The CST's Saudi Internet Report found that peak internet use runs from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. (MIT Sloan Management Review Middle East), so evening check-in replies are worth testing. Our prayer-time training schedule shows how to build a week around prayer.
Ramadan
Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, subject to the sighting of the moon (Gulf News). The Saudi Ministry of Health says the best times to exercise during Ramadan are two hours after iftar, or between iftar and suhoor after Tarawih (MOH). Build your Ramadan package well before it starts. Clients with health conditions should talk to their doctor before training while fasting.
Women-only coaching
Saudi Arabia began licensing women's gyms in February 2017 (Arab News). By 30 June 2026, Leejam, which runs Fitness Time, had 81 female centres and 127K female members, up 23% from 103K (Leejam Q2 2026 presentation). For a female coach, a ladies-only online offer is a clear position. We go deeper in women-only online coaching in the Gulf.
Know who else is moving here, too. Leejam's 2025 annual report says it is launching a dedicated personal training app and AI-assisted program design in 2026.
Where Trainera fits (and where it does not)
Trainera is one place to run clients, plans, check-ins, payments and community, in Arabic, but it does not handle your Saudi tax or local payment rails for you.
What it does for a Saudi coach:
- Arabic with a full right-to-left layout, among 26 app languages, on web, iOS and Android. TRAI, the in-app AI assistant, answers in the user's language.
- Training and nutrition plans, a library of more than 1,800 exercises and more than 1,100 recipes, questionnaires for intake, and check-ins in the app instead of a phone gallery.
- A client community on Pro and higher, useful for women-only groups.
- Trainer plans priced in US dollars for Saudi Arabia: Free ($0, up to 3 clients), Starter ($19.99 a month, 10 clients), Pro ($49.99, 30 clients), Business ($99, 75 clients), and Enterprise on a quote. Flat price per plan, not per client. Prices differ by country on trainera.fit/pricing.
- Your own branded iOS and Android app only on Enterprise. Trainera builds it and publishes it under Trainera's own App Store and Google Play developer accounts, with your app name and icon.
Payments: coaching payments can run by card through Stripe, PayPal, bank transfer, or cash you record yourself. A platform fee applies to coaching paid inside the platform (8% on Free and Starter, 5% on Pro, 3% on Business, 1% on Enterprise); cash you record carries no fee. On the web checkout, some clients will see Apple Pay or Google Pay if their device has it set up. Keep in mind that Stripe's own list does not include Saudi Arabia, and PayPal in Trainera does not cover SAR. Trainera's checkout does not cover mada, STC Pay, Tabby, Tamara or SADAD either. If your clients pay that way, take the payment through your own bank or provider and record it in Trainera.
Tax: Trainera does not issue ZATCA e-invoices. Keep your own compliant e-invoicing solution.
If PDF plans, bank transfers and a spreadsheet are enough for you at the start, you may not need software yet. Trainers sign up on Free with no card, so you can test the coaching platform with your first clients.
Your first 30 days, as a checklist
Use this order so you do not sell before the basics are in place.
- Contact the Ministry of Sport about SAUDIREPS and ask whether it applies to online coaching.
- Check on freelance.sa (Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development) whether personal training is an approved activity, or decide on a company.
- Ask ZATCA whether you need to register for VAT, and note the SAR 187,500 e-invoicing figure.
- Write a short privacy notice for clients and trim your intake form.
- Build two packages first: monthly coaching and one program with a fixed end date.
- Translate your intake form and welcome message into Arabic.
- Put Ramadan 2027 in your calendar now and draft the program by January.
- Take on 3-5 first clients, track your hours per client, then revisit your prices.
