How do coaches in Saudi Arabia and the UAE get paid?

The main options in both countries are cards (mada debit cards in Saudi Arabia), Apple Pay and bank transfer, plus cash for in-person sessions and buy now, pay later through Tabby or Tamara for bigger packages. The biggest difference between the two markets is Stripe: its own country list includes the United Arab Emirates but not Saudi Arabia, so a Saudi coach normally takes card payments through a local bank or provider. Pick one main method and one backup, and record every payment in one place.

This guide is for personal trainers, online coaches and small studios. It describes the systems and links official pages; it is not legal, tax or financial advice. Facts were checked in October 2026.

Payment methods in Saudi Arabia and the UAE at a glance

The two markets differ in a few important ways: mada, SADAD and STC Bank are Saudi systems, while Stripe lists only the UAE.

Saudi Arabia: mada first, then Apple Pay, SADAD and transfers

In Saudi Arabia, build your payments around mada, because it is the national debit network your clients already carry.

The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) describes mada as one of the national systems it has owned since its launch in 1990. Its services include mada e-commerce with 3-D Secure, "mada Atheer" contactless payments, a SoftPOS app for Android merchants and the mada Pay wallet for Android (SAMA, checked October 2026). For a coach that gives two practical routes: an online checkout through a provider that accepts mada, and tap-to-pay on your phone for sessions in a park, a compound gym or a client's home.

Paying electronically is already the norm. SAMA reported that electronic payments made up 85 percent of retail payments in 2025, up from 79 percent in 2024 (Zawya / Saudi Gazette, checked October 2026). That covers all retail, not just coaching, but it shows what clients are used to.

Apple Pay

Apple lists Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates among the countries where Apple Pay is supported (Apple, checked October 2026). On a phone, a checkout with Apple Pay saves the client from typing a card number, which matters when a sale happens in a chat on a phone.

SADAD

SADAD is SAMA's bill payment system, launched in 2004, which lets consumers view and pay invoices "through all banking channels and licensed digital wallets" (SAMA, checked October 2026). It fits fixed bills such as a monthly coaching fee. Whether a sole coach can issue SADAD bills depends on the bank or provider, so ask yours before you promise it to clients.

STC Bank

STC Bank is the former Saudi Digital Payments Company, which ran the stc pay wallet, and it says it is now "licensed by the Saudi Central Bank (SAMA) to carry out digital banking activities" (STC Bank, checked October 2026). For you, a client paying from STC Bank is a bank transfer: give them your account details and match the transfer to their name when it arrives.

What about Stripe in Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia is not on Stripe's list of supported countries (checked October 2026). Workarounds you may read about, such as a company abroad, are third-party ideas, not a Stripe statement, and raise their own tax and legal questions: talk to an accountant first.

UAE: Stripe, Apple Pay and bank transfer

In the UAE you have more off-the-shelf options, because Stripe lists the United Arab Emirates among its supported countries.

That means a UAE coach can usually take card payments through Stripe or a platform built on it, subject to Stripe's own account checks. Apple Pay works there too, and bank transfer is a sensible backup for large packages.

Keep an eye on your totals. UAE VAT is 5 percent, and registration is mandatory once taxable supplies and imports exceed AED 375,000 a year and optional above AED 187,500 (u.ae, checked October 2026). Permits, VAT and how UAE clients pay are covered in more detail in our guide to working as a freelance personal trainer in the UAE.

Buy now, pay later: Tabby and Tamara

Buy now, pay later (BNPL) lets a client split the cost of a package into instalments, and Tamara and Tabby both publish central bank licence statements on their own sites, but you need a separate merchant agreement with each.

  • Tamara, Saudi Arabia: "Tamara Finance Company (a joint-stock Saudi company). Under the supervision and control of The Saudi Central Bank (SAMA). Under License No. 95/A Sh/202502." Its marketing says "Pay in up to 24 months" and "Sharia compliant" (Tamara, checked October 2026).
  • Tamara, UAE: "Tamara FZE is licensed and regulated by the Central Bank of the UAE" (Tamara UAE).
  • Tabby, UAE: "Tabby Cash Services are provided by Tabby Payments LLC, which is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE." Its business page offers "4 interest-free payments or up to 12 months to pay" (Tabby, checked October 2026). Those are the company's own claims.
  • Tabby, Saudi Arabia: we could not confirm the licence wording for the Saudi entity, so check with SAMA or Tabby before you sign up.

In practice, BNPL makes the most sense for a package paid upfront, such as a 12-week program or a Ramadan challenge, not for a monthly fee that is already small. Fees and payout timing are set by the provider, so read the merchant terms, and offer instalments as an option, never the default.

Bank transfer and cash: still useful, harder to track

Bank transfer and cash do not go through a card processor, but they cost you time, because every payment has to be matched and chased by hand.

Transfers work well for long packages and for clients who prefer them. Cash fits sessions in person. The common mistake is keeping these payments in your banking app and your memory, until a client who paid in cash and a client who forgot look the same at renewal. Write each one down the day it arrives. Our guide to recurring payments for personal trainers without a website walks through a simple routine.

How to set up coaching payments, step by step

Start from where your business is registered, then choose one main method and one backup.

  1. Confirm your status. In Saudi Arabia the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development issues a self-employment document through freelance.sa; whether fitness coaching is an approved activity there is something to check with the ministry. In the UAE, MoHRE issues a freelance work permit. More on this in starting an online coaching business in Saudi Arabia.
  2. Keep coaching income in its own bank account.
  3. Choose your main method. Saudi Arabia: a provider that accepts mada and Apple Pay. UAE: Stripe or a platform built on it, with Apple Pay.
  4. Add one backup, usually bank transfer.
  5. Decide on BNPL only if you sell packages that are paid upfront.
  6. Write your payment terms in one short message: price, what it covers, due date, what happens if a payment is late, and your refund rule.
  7. Record every payment, whichever way it arrives.
  8. Sort out VAT and invoices before you grow: see the next section.

One local detail helps with reminders. The Saudi Internet Report 2025 from the Communications, Space and Technology Commission found that peak internet use is between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m. (MIT Sloan Management Review Middle East, checked October 2026), so time renewal reminders for the evening.

VAT and invoices when you take payments

Saudi VAT is 15 percent and UAE VAT is 5 percent, and in Saudi Arabia ZATCA's Phase 2 e-invoicing reaches taxpayers with turnover above SAR 187,500 by 1 February 2027.

Phase One of FATOORA has applied to all resident taxpayers since 4 December 2021, and Phase Two integration started on 1 January 2023 in waves (ZATCA, checked October 2026). Whether these rules apply to you depends on your registration and turnover, so confirm with ZATCA or an accountant. The details are in our sibling guide on VAT and e-invoicing for fitness businesses in Saudi Arabia.

Where Trainera fits

Trainera's online checkout is card based, so it covers card and Apple Pay or Google Pay clients, while mada, SADAD, STC Bank, Tabby and Tamara run through your own bank or provider and get recorded in the app.

PaymentIn Trainera
Card (Visa, Mastercard, American Express)Yes, through Stripe
Apple Pay or Google PayThe web checkout can show them on devices that have them set up
PayPalYes, but not in SAR or AED
Bank transferYes
CashYou record it; no platform fee on recorded cash
mada, SADAD, STC Bank, Tabby, TamaraNot built in: take the payment with your own provider or bank and record it

Payment models are request only, monthly subscription, plan based and cash. Because card checkout runs through Stripe and Stripe does not list Saudi Arabia, a coach based there should confirm with Trainera support how card payments work for their account before relying on them.

Trainer plans are shown in US dollars in Saudi Arabia and the UAE: Free with 3 clients, Starter $19.99, Pro $49.99 and Business $99 a month, with Enterprise quoted. The platform fee on coaching paid inside the platform is 8% on Free and Starter, 5% on Pro, 3% on Business and 1% on Enterprise. Gyms pay $119 (Core), $219 (White Label) or $259 (Studio) a month; gym member packages sold online go through the gym's own Stripe account with 0% platform fee, in currencies that include AED but not SAR, and since Stripe's list does not include Saudi Arabia, a Saudi gym should check that step first, or take SAR payments at the desk and record them in Trainera. Prices differ by country on trainera.fit/pricing.

The app runs in 26 languages with full right-to-left Arabic. Trainera does not issue ZATCA or UAE FTA e-invoices, so keep a compliant invoicing solution of your own. If you want an app under your own brand, that is the Enterprise plan for trainers or White Label and Studio for gyms; see white-label fitness apps in Saudi Arabia. Compare other options in the best personal training app with payments or see the payment methods page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use Stripe in Saudi Arabia as a personal trainer?

Not as a Saudi business today: Stripe's own country list (stripe.com/global, checked October 2026) includes the United Arab Emirates but not Saudi Arabia. A Saudi coach can take card payments through a local bank or payment provider that accepts mada.

Does Apple Pay work in Saudi Arabia and the UAE?

Yes. Apple lists both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates among the countries where Apple Pay is supported. Your checkout or terminal still has to offer it.

How do online coaches in Saudi Arabia accept mada?

Through a bank or payment provider that accepts mada online (mada e-commerce uses 3-D Secure) or through a SoftPOS tap-to-pay app on an Android phone. mada is a national system owned by the Saudi Central Bank.

Can my coaching clients pay with Tabby or Tamara?

Only if you sign a merchant agreement with the provider. Tamara is SAMA-licensed in Saudi Arabia and its UAE entity is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE; Tabby's UAE entity is licensed by the Central Bank of the UAE. Fees and terms are set by each provider.

Does Trainera accept mada or STC Pay?

No. Trainera's online checkout is card based, with Apple Pay or Google Pay shown on devices that have them set up. Take mada, STC Bank, Tabby or Tamara payments through your own bank or provider and record them in Trainera.
