Does a Rep Counter App Record Video? On-Device AI Explained

A camera rep counter needs to see you, but it does not need to send your video anywhere. Here is the difference between cloud and on-device pose tracking, what TRAI Vision saves and what it never touches, and five questions to ask any fitness app with a camera.

Does a rep counter app record your video?
It does not have to. A camera rep counter needs to see your body, but the analysis can run entirely on your phone: the pose model reads each frame, extracts joint positions and discards the image. TRAI Vision works this way. The video is never uploaded or stored, the microphone is not used, and only your rep count is saved.
Updated 6 November 2026. TRAI Vision is our own product. This is not legal advice; it explains how the feature handles camera data.

Two ways to build a camera rep counter
| Cloud processing | On-device processing | |
|---|---|---|
| Where frames go | Uploaded to a server for analysis | Stay in the phone or browser memory |
| Who could access them | Depends on the provider's storage, staff access and retention | Nobody outside your device |
| Needs a fast connection while training | Yes | No |
| Limited by | Network speed and server cost | The processing power of your device |
Cloud processing is not automatically unsafe, but it creates a copy of a very personal video somewhere else, and every copy needs protecting. On-device processing removes the question: there is no copy to protect.
How on-device pose tracking works
Google's MediaPipe Pose Landmarker, which TRAI Vision uses, is designed to run on phones and in web browsers. For each camera frame it outputs 33 body landmarks, points such as shoulders, elbows, hips, knees and ankles. The app then works with those points, calculating angles to count reps and check form. The camera image itself is just the input for that frame.
In practice this means three things:
- Nothing is uploaded. Pose detection happens on the device, and the video is never sent or recorded.
- The microphone stays off. TRAI Vision uses the camera only. The coaching voice is a recording played by the app.
- Performance depends on your device. On slower phones TRAI keeps counting but turns form checks off, and tells you so, rather than sending the work to a server.
What TRAI Vision saves, and what it does not
| Data | Saved? |
|---|---|
| Camera video | No, never uploaded or stored |
| Audio from the microphone | No, the microphone is not used |
| Spoken form cues during the set | No, they are not saved |
| Green and amber rep ratings and the set summary | Shown during and after the set; not kept as a form history |
| Number of reps counted | Yes, written into the set in your workout log |
The rep count is the same kind of data you would type in yourself. If you train with a coach on Trainera, they see the counted reps in your log, not video and not form feedback.
Why this matters under GDPR
Training at home puts your body, your home and sometimes your family in the frame. Under the GDPR, data concerning health belongs to the special categories in Article 9, which can only be processed under specific conditions. Article 25 asks for data protection by design and by default, meaning a product should collect and keep only what it needs for its purpose. A rep counter needs to know that you completed a rep. It does not need to keep the video in which you did it.
Five questions to ask any fitness app with a camera
- Where are frames processed? On the device, or uploaded? Look for an explicit statement, not a general "we take privacy seriously".
- Is anything stored? Video, still images, pose data or only results such as rep counts?
- Which permissions does it ask for? A rep counter needs the camera. Ask why if it also wants the microphone, location or contacts.
- Who can see the results? Only you, your coach, or the provider's staff?
- Can you delete your data? Check how to export or delete your account and workout history.

Practical privacy tips for camera workouts
- Point the camera at a plain wall so the frame shows you and as little of your home as possible.
- Keep family members out of the frame, which also helps tracking.
- Review camera permissions in your phone settings and grant access only to apps you use for training.
- If you share progress with a coach, decide which records they should see.
What on-device does not change
On-device processing protects the video, but your Trainera account still holds the data you choose to log, such as workouts, rep counts and nutrition entries, under the platform's privacy terms. Read the security and data overview to see how account data is handled.
