Push-Up Counter App: Count Push-Ups Automatically With AI

A push-up counter on your phone should count real reps, not half reps and head bobs. Here is how a camera push-up counter decides what counts, where to put the phone, which faults it calls out and a 6-week plan to raise your max.

How does a push-up counter app work?

A push-up counter app uses your phone camera to follow your shoulders, elbows, hips and ankles. Each time your elbows bend through the bottom and straighten at the top, it counts a rep out loud. A good counter also watches your body line, so sagging hips and short reps get called out instead of quietly counted.

Why push-ups are worth counting properly

Push-ups are a real strength exercise, not just a warm-up. In a study by Calatayud and colleagues, elastic-band push-ups and the bench press produced similar strength gains over five weeks when muscle activity was matched. They are also a useful health marker: a 2019 study in JAMA Network Open followed 1,104 active male firefighters for about ten years and found that men who could complete more than 40 push-ups had a 96% lower rate of cardiovascular events than men who completed fewer than 10. The authors note it was an observational study of middle-aged active men, so it does not prove cause or apply to everyone, but it shows why a reliable count is worth having.

Counting by hand fails exactly when it matters: near your limit, when breathing is hard and reps get shorter. That is also when form breaks down.

What counts as one push-up

PhaseWhat the camera checksCue you may hear
TopArms fully straight"Straighten your arms at the top"
Body lineShoulders, hips and ankles in one line"Hips up" or "Hips down"
ElbowsElbows not flaring far away from the body"Keep your elbows closer to your body"
BottomElbows bend through the full range before you push back upCounted when the cycle completes

TRAI gives one correction per rep, picking by priority: safety first, then the movement, then detail. Each rep gets a green dot when clean or an amber dot when it had a fault, and the set ends with a line such as "14/18 good reps, most common: Hips up".

Set up the camera for push-ups

  1. Phone on the floor, to your side. Follow the placement the app shows before the set; for push-ups the camera sits low and sees you side-on, about 2 to 3 metres away, so your head, hands and feet stay in frame at the bottom of the rep.
  2. Side view. From the side the camera sees the elbow angle and the hip line, the two things that matter most in a push-up. TRAI only judges what it can see from the angle it detects.
  3. Light in front of you. Avoid a bright window behind you.
  4. Hold the start position for 2 seconds. TRAI calibrates to your body before the first rep counts.

A 6-week plan to raise your push-up max

Test first: one set of as many clean push-ups as you can do with the camera on. Use the number of green reps, not the total, as your max. Then train three days a week with at least one rest day between sessions.

WeekSets x reps (percent of your clean max)Rest
14 x 50%90 s
24 x 55%90 s
35 x 55%75 s
45 x 60%75 s
54 x 65%, last set to a clean max90 s
6Day 1 and 2: 3 x 50%. Day 3: retestFull rest before the test

Round to whole reps. If fewer than 6 clean push-ups is your starting point, do the same plan with an easier variation, such as hands on a bench or step, and move to the floor when you can do 12 clean reps.

The rule that makes it work

Only move to the next week when most reps in every set were green. If the summary keeps naming the same fault, for example "Hips down", repeat the week and add a plank day: the plank clock in TRAI Vision only runs while your hips are in position, which trains exactly the line you are losing.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does an app count push-ups?

A camera push-up counter tracks your shoulders, elbows, hips and ankles. A rep counts when the elbows bend through the bottom of the movement and straighten again at the top. TRAI Vision does this on your device and says each number out loud.

Where do I put the phone for push-ups?

On the floor, to your side, about 2 to 3 metres away so your body from head to feet is in frame. From the side the camera sees both the elbow angle and the line from shoulders to ankles.

Does it count half push-ups?

A rep counts when the movement completes the cycle from top to bottom and back. If you stop short at the top, TRAI tells you to straighten your arms; if your hips sag or pike, it says "Hips up" or "Hips down".

Is the push-up counter free?

Yes. TRAI Vision is free for every Trainera account on the web, iOS and Android.

How many push-ups should I be able to do?

There is no universal number, but push-up capacity is a meaningful marker. In a 2019 JAMA Network Open study of 1,104 male firefighters, men who could do more than 40 push-ups had a 96% lower rate of cardiovascular events over ten years than those who did fewer than 10. The study was observational and limited to active men.

Does it save my push-up count?

Yes. When you finish the set, the counted reps are written into that set in your workout log. The video is never uploaded or stored.
