MacroFactor Alternatives 2026: Free Tiers and Training

What is the best alternative to MacroFactor?
It depends on why you are leaving. If you want a free plan, Cronometer has a free tier with a barcode scanner, and its Gold plan costs $10.99 a month or $59.99 a year. If you want workout plans and a food log in the same app, Trainera is free to start, with Premium at $6.99 a month in the US. For reference, MacroFactor costs $11.99 a month, $47.99 for six months or $71.99 a year in the US, and has no free tier.
Every price below comes from the vendors' own pages and App Store listings, checked October 2026, and prices differ by country.
If you are still choosing between two specific trackers, our MacroFactor vs MyFitnessPal and Cronometer vs MacroFactor comparisons go feature by feature, and the best macro tracking app roundup ranks the whole field. This page is for when MacroFactor no longer fits you.
Why people look for an alternative to MacroFactor
Most reasons trace back to four facts on MacroFactor's own pages.
- No free version. You get a 7-day trial, then you pay. The product page is blunt about it: "there isn't (and will never be) a free version" (macrofactor.com, checked October 2026).
- The monthly price. Month to month, it is $11.99 in the US. The yearly plan works out to $5.99 a month, but you pay $71.99 up front.
- Training sits in a second app. MacroFactor sells workouts as a separate app and offers existing customers "a bundle of the two apps" (macrofactor.com/workouts). The US App Store listing shows an "Annual Subscription Bundle" at $89.99, without saying what it includes.
- Language. The App Store lists English and Japanese only (MacroFactor on the US App Store).
None of these is a flaw for everyone. MacroFactor's nutrition coach algorithm "makes weekly changes to your macro plan" based on what you log and how your weight trends. If the weekly adjustment is what you value most, check that a replacement really does the same job before you cancel.
What MacroFactor costs, so you know what you are comparing
In the US, MacroFactor is $11.99 a month, $47.99 every six months or $71.99 a year, after a 7-day trial.
| Plan | US price | Billing | Trial | What you get |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $11.99 | Every month | 7 days | The full app: AI photo and "describe your meal" logging, barcode and nutrition label scanning, weekly macro changes |
| Six months | $47.99 | Every 6 months | 7 days | Same features |
| Yearly | $71.99 | Every year (equal to $5.99 a month) | 7 days | Same features |
| Free | None | - | - | Not offered |
Source: macrofactor.com and the App Store description, which adds: "These prices are for US customers. Pricing in other countries may vary." Unlike most apps here, MacroFactor has one paid plan, so AI photo logging is not held back for a higher tier.
Six MacroFactor alternatives and who each one fits
Each one beats MacroFactor for a specific reader; none beats it for everyone.
1. Cronometer: the free option for people who like detail
Cronometer fits you if you want a serious tracker without paying. The free Basic version can be used "for an unlimited amount of time" and includes a barcode scanner, tracking of up to 95 nutrients and over 1 million lab-analyzed or verified foods (Cronometer Gold page; subscription types, checked October 2026).
Gold costs $10.99 a month or $59.99 a year and adds AI photo logging, voice logging and Crono Coach, an AI coaching feature. We found no Gold trial length on Cronometer's official pages, and the App Store lists English as the only language.
2. MyFitnessPal: the familiar free logger, with a price to check yourself
MyFitnessPal fits you if you want a huge food list and free logging of food and exercise. The free tier still covers custom calorie and macro goals by percentage, recipes and partner app links, but barcode scanning has been Premium-only since October 1, 2022 (MyFitnessPal help).
Premium pricing is not consistent across official pages. The Premium page, as served to us from outside the US, showed $9.99 a month or $49.99 a year, while the US App Store listing also shows a $19.99 monthly and a $79.99 yearly option. MyFitnessPal itself says "Pricing varies by country and by plan length", so trust the price in your own store. Meal Scan, the photo logger, is Premium, English-only and not on the website. First-time users get a 7-day trial. If price is the main question, our MyFitnessPal Premium cost guide covers what is still free.
3. Lose It!: one yearly price, or pay once
Lose It! fits you if you would rather pay once a year, or once ever. Premium is $79.99 a year, the official tier list has no monthly plan, and Lifetime is $299.99 ($229.99 for active Premium members, no refunds) (Lose It! help center, checked October 2026).
The free Basic plan gives you a daily calorie budget and the 50M+ food list. Whether barcode scanning is free is unclear: one official page puts it under Premium, another lists it in the free version. Snap It, the photo logger, is Premium and only works with your device language set to English. New users get a 7-day trial.
4. Yazio: a free calorie counter in many languages
Yazio fits you if you want to track in your own language: the App Store lists 20, including German, Italian, Dutch, Swedish and Danish. The free calorie counter includes a barcode scanner. AI photo logging "was initially available to all users for free and is now part of Yazio Pro", and Yazio itself calls the result "a rough estimate" (Yazio help).
We found no Pro list price on Yazio's official pages. The US App Store listing shows several options, including "12 Months" at $23.90 and $47.90, and the price at checkout can differ. A 7-day trial is offered "occasionally" and only on the website.
5. Cal AI: photo-first, not a free-tier pick
Cal AI fits you only if snapping photos is the whole point. The App Store listing says "FOOD SCANNING ANALYSIS RESULTS REQUIRE A SUBSCRIPTION", and calai.app publishes no prices (Cal AI FAQ, checked October 2026). The US App Store shows "Unlimited" options from $2.99 to $29.99 with no billing period stated, plus a 3-day free trial. Cal AI says it is "about 80% accurate" without publishing a method. It needs iOS 18 or Android 10 or newer. Our Cal AI alternatives guide goes deeper.
6. Trainera: workouts and food tracking in one app
Trainera fits you if you want a free tier and your training plan next to your food log. Details follow the table.

Where Trainera fits as a MacroFactor alternative
Trainera is the pick if you want AI training plans and nutrition tracking in one app, starting free; it is not a copy of MacroFactor.
The Free plan is free forever with no card: workout logging, the diet tracker with calories and macros, 50 exercises, basic analytics, 1 AI training plan and 1 AI nutrition plan a month, plus wearable sync with Apple Health, Health Connect, Fitbit and Polar. Pro ($5.99 a month in the US) adds unlimited exercises, full analytics, 5 AI training and 5 AI nutrition plans a month, a weekly AI shopping list, TRAI (the in-app AI assistant) with 40 requests a month and offline downloads. Premium ($6.99 a month) adds AI food photo scanning, up to 20 scans a day, AI Nutrition Chat, 10 AI training plans, 10 AI nutrition plans and 10 AI workouts a month, and TRAI with 90 requests a month.
Honest details before you switch:
- The photo scan is an AI estimate. It names the foods and estimates grams, calories and macros, and you can correct each item before you log it. It does not replace weighing food when you need precision.
- Food search pulls from Open Food Facts and USDA FoodData Central. You can type a barcode number on every plan; scanning it with the camera sits inside the Premium AI food scanner.
- Plans are monthly only, with no yearly price. Prices differ by country on trainera.fit/pricing.
- The library has more than 1,800 exercises, exercise videos and more than 1,100 recipes. Trainera runs on the web, iOS and Android, in 26 languages.
- If you work with a personal trainer or a gym that uses Trainera, you use the app for free through them.
Where another app suits you better: if you want detailed nutrient tracking for free (up to 95 nutrients), Cronometer is the stronger choice. If MacroFactor's weekly macro changes are why you track at all, its yearly plan at $71.99 may be worth keeping. More combined options: best app to track workouts and nutrition together.
How to switch without losing a week of tracking
Move your targets first and cancel only once the new app works for your own food.
- Write down your calorie and macro targets from MacroFactor while you still have access.
- Pick the replacement by your main reason for leaving.
- On day one, log the ten foods you eat most often, both packaged and home cooked.
- If you rely on photo logging, compare a few photo entries with weighed portions; our guide to AI calorie counter accuracy explains where photo estimates go wrong.
- Note when each trial ends (7 days for MyFitnessPal and Lose It!, 3 days for Cal AI) and cancel where you subscribed: the App Store, Google Play or the vendor's website.
One note that matters more than any app: if you have a history of disordered eating, are pregnant, have a medical condition or take GLP-1 medication, talk to your doctor before you set calorie or macro targets. Trainera is not a medical service, and no tracking app replaces medical advice.
Your shortlist, matched to the reason you are leaving
- "I want it free and detailed": Cronometer Basic.
- "I would rather pay once": Lose It! Lifetime.
- "I want it in my language": Yazio, or Trainera with 26 app languages.
- "I only want to snap photos": Cal AI, knowing scan results need a subscription.
- "I want my workouts and food in one place": Trainera, free to start.
- "I just want it cheaper": MacroFactor's own yearly plan, equal to $5.99 a month, may already solve it.
